DX51D, DX52D, DX53D, DX54D: Which Forming Grade Does Your Appliance Panel Actually Need?

Two prepainted sheets can carry the same paint, the same zinc, the same gauge — and differ by a few hundred yuan a tonne. The difference sits in the steel underneath: one is a forming grade, the other a structural grade. The press reveals that difference as a crack, usually at the arc corner of a door panel.

What the grade letters hide

The DX series is cold-rolled flat steel for forming; +Z means a hot-dip galvanized substrate. The higher the number, the better the formability: lower carbon and sulphur, higher elongation, a higher r-value (resistance to thinning). It is not a strength ranking — it is a ranking of "how deep can you draw it before it tears".

GradeYield strength (ref.)ElongationTypical use
DX51D+Z270–500 MPa≥ 20%Back panels, brackets, shallow bends
DX52D+Z140–300 MPa≥ 24%Fridge side panels, shallow flanges
DX53D+Z140–260 MPa≥ 28%Moderate draws, deep flanges
DX54D+Z120–220 MPa≥ 32%Deep-drawn doors, curved liner parts

Yield and elongation are industry reference ranges; the mill certificate for the corresponding EN 10346 / GB/T 2518 grade governs.

Choose by draw depth, not by price

One question decides the grade: how deep does the part draw?

A practical rule: once the smallest formed radius on the part drops below twice the sheet thickness, you have left the safe zone of DX51D/52D. If in doubt, send the drawing — we set the grade from the forming depth.

The coating has to be chosen with the steel

After the grade comes the film: a deep-drawn part needs paint that deforms with the steel without cracking — a 20–25 μm topcoat, 100+ MEK rubs (full cure) and a 0T bend without cracking. We test all three on every batch and ship the data with the goods.

What happens when DX51D meets a deep draw

Micro-cracks appear at the radius first, and the coating lets go right behind them; in volume production the die wears faster and the line jams. The grade saving never covers one stoppage and a batch of scrap. This is why we read the forming depth before we talk price.

We stock DX51D+Z through DX54D+Z, zinc Z100–Z180, finished gauges 0.3–1.2 mm. Send your drawing and target application — quotes back within 24 hours, and deep-drawn parts get a trial stamping first.
